What do we mean when we talk about fitness?

There are numerous definitions of fitness today but has stood the test of time was proposed by Aristotle around about 2,500 years ago. This process helps to prevent obesity and is important in the control of diseases such as diabetes.

All of these benefits, although very real, are also largely invisible, but other benefits of a regular exercise program are more obvious and include increased muscle mass, toned legs, arms, stomach, buttocks, and skin of overall healthy appearance. At the same time, the exercise provides greater strength, better balance, strength and, more often than not, a better mental outlook on life.

Of course, different forms of exercise routine will concentrate on different areas of the body. Aerobic routines will help the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, weight training develops muscular tone and mass, pilates and yoga aid balance, flexibility and muscle control. But while each of these can focus on particular areas, which help to improve fitness throughout the body, since the various body systems are interrelated.

Best of all, these benefits, at least to some extent, can be achieved with minimal daily effort. Moderate intensity activity for as little as 20 to 30 minutes each day, five days a week, go a long way toward improving your overall fitness.

A series of simple activities that provide excellent exercise can be done without any training or special equipment. These may include a walk, a short daily jog or simply taking the stairs instead of elevators.

A more vigorous activity, like playing tennis, a couple of laps in the pool, an hour on the treadmill or exercise bike, or any of a dozen other activities can significantly increase your fitness with a small investment of time and money.
